Aileen Ludington and Hans Diehl introduced me to boutons one spring evening two years ago. I was frustrated and looking for reasons why my morning exercise routine wasn't routine. I had started it over 25 years ago - one would think it would have become a habit. I had heard it "takes 21 days to form a habit" from various sources so my search began. What happens after 21 days of a repeated thought or behavior? An excerpt from Ludington and Diehl's book, "Take Charge of Your Health" referencing a Reader's Digest article by Anya Bateman ("Three Weeks to a Better Me", Sept. 1983) described boutons and the role they play in forming habits. The thought of the synaptic bouton terminal grabbed hold and hasn't let go.

Kristi Porter lives with Dan, her husband of nearly 40 years, in Indianola, Iowa. They have three great kids and three wonderful grandchildren.
