The Habit Tablet™

The bothersome truth: habits
cannot be broken or uprooted.

Habits are cobwebs at first; cables at last.
Chinese Proverb

Research reveals learned habits are in our system in the form of neurological pathways and DNA chromosomes. We are the children of our ancestral heritage (nature), as well as the product of our environment (nurture). We inherit and learn useful habits that serve us well. We also have habits that are not so useful and we commit to breaking these.

The reality is habits cannot be broken. The web is woven; nerve cells have established connected paths and information is programmed to follow it. Establishing an information path when learning how to tie our shoes or ride a bike is very useful. The not-so-useful paths of behavior are those we want to abandon.

The good news is that we form new information paths when a behavior is introduced and repeated often enough. Our nervous system naturally creates the connected pathways and the new behavior information follows with precision.
